What’s The Difference Between Advertising And Marketing For Carpet Cleaners?

Nov 5, 2026

Two identical cream carpet rolls, one wrapped in crumpled newspaper and the other in gold paper, on a stone plinth.

Same carpet. Different story.

Most of what gets sold to us carpet cleaners is advertising.

You know the pitch. Google pay per click, Facebook ads, Instagram ads. An agency promises us results, takes our money, and delivers a pile of leads who all want a special deal and the rock-bottom price. Funny how that keeps happening.

It isn’t really the agency’s fault. It’s how the whole thing is built. Ads are about screaming our message in people’s faces and hoping someone bites. They don’t think about attracting the right client. They focus on attracting any client. And the people who respond to being screamed at are mostly the ones shopping on price.

That’s advertising. It is NOT marketing. Marketing is about creating a perception. It’s about making a customer want to work with YOUR business instead of everyone else’s before they even speak to you.

What Wine And Headaches Can Teach Us About Marketing?

Take a big-brand headache tablet from the supermarket and the cheap homebrand version sitting next to it. Same active ingredient. Same dose. It’s literally the same shit in a different box.

And yet we say the pricey one works better. And we’re right. It does.

But why? Make the pill more expensive and it works even better. Even the colour of the pill and the look of the packaging change how well it works. How is that even possible?

The key is the story. A more expensive, fancier box creates a different perception, and a different perception creates a different outcome. Our bodies actually respond to the story. The story makes the pill in the box work better.

It isn’t just pills. Wine tastes better to us when it’s poured from a heavy bottle. Our food tastes better when it’s plated well. Give us the exact same thing wrapped in a better story and we enjoy it more.

That’s the placebo effect, and good branding is a placebo machine. The big companies have known it for decades.

What That Means For Us Carpet Cleaners

Our clients can’t judge our cleaning skills before they buy. They can’t inspect our work in advance, and they have no idea how hot our water is or what’s in our chemicals.

So they do what we all do. They take mental shortcuts.

The signals clients notice before they can judge the work.

Think about the last time we hired someone for a job we know nothing about. A mechanic. A dentist. We can’t check the work, so our brains look for signals instead. The van. The uniform. The website. The photos. The reviews. How the person sounds on the phone. Those signals tell us whether to trust them, and we decide in seconds.

Our clients are doing exactly the same thing with us. If those signals say “serious operator”, they believe the clean is better. And just like the pill, in their experience of it, it IS better. The same job from a carpet cleaner who looks cheap feels cheaper.

That’s not trickery. If we do great work, good marketing lets the client see it before they’ve paid.

The Clients We Attract Are The Story We Tell

A shouting ad pulls in people who’ll haggle. A strong perception pulls in people who’ve already decided. They ring up and say “I’ve read your reviews, I’d like to book”, and the price barely comes up.

Almost nobody in carpet cleaning is thinking this way. The whole industry is busy buying clicks, so the few of us who build real perception look like we’re from a different planet.

Use The Placebo Effect In Your Business

So here’s the challenge.

What if we stopped asking “where can I buy more leads?” and started asking “what perception is my business creating before anyone picks up the phone?”

Think about it from the client’s side. Before they ever speak to us, they’ve already looked at our website, our photos, our reviews, our van, our logo. They’ve already formed a story about us. Is it a good one? Does it say “premium, trusted, worth every cent”? Or does it say “cheap, last-minute, whoever’s available”?

Because that story changes everything. It changes who calls. It changes how they talk to us when they do. It changes whether they haggle or just book. And just like the pill, it changes how good they think the clean is once we’ve finished.

Same carpet. Same machine. Same hard work. But wrap that business in gold instead of last year’s newspaper, and the clients who find us are different. They’re happier to pay more, they trust us faster, and they rave about the result. Not because we cleaned any better, but because they came in expecting the best, and our bodies, and theirs, respond to that.

Almost every carpet cleaner is wrapped in newspaper. The few who aren’t don’t need to shout. People line up.

So look at your business the way your next client does. What’s the story? And what would it take to make it a golden one?
